Rapids! – EP
Rapids! instantly capture my full attention on EP opener ‘Fuses’, an engaging, upbeat song with quick drumming and quirky lyrics, the listener is trapped by its enigmatic energy. Literally fusing the likes of Bloc Party and Good Books together it’s a great EP opener and what follows is equally as exciting.
Held together by heavy drum beats, the bulk of the EP runs on a dark sound, enticing the listener into a refreshing new dimension. Echoing over the drums are overtly soft guitar chords with an atmospheric sound, this is particularly apparent on the ambient song ‘Void’. However the band combine a mixture of genres such as with ‘Economics’ and ‘Maps’ which touch on edgier rock with the lyrics almost shouted and the drums accelerating up to maximum speed, this shows the band have a diverse nature to their music.
Further influences such as Joy Division and The Cure make up a husky, raw voice projecting the lyrics with real passion. ‘The Elitist’ integrates this passion with foot to floor tapping alongside sharp riffs and fast beats. The alternative track ‘Inland Empire’ alters the band’s sound, with a calmer opening riff and a catchy chorus, this track breaks into the soul and leads you to explore your inner thoughts and reflect on the singer’s touching lyrics.
Musically, Rapids! EP is a reflection of a well-rehearsed band with an individual style and sound. The artwork for the EP is also impressive reflecting the band’s dark sound, showing a professional band with an appetite for success. We hear there are some impending exciting developments for Rapids!; good news for what I would consider new and exciting talent, ready to be explored and given a well deserved opportunity.
